Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson

Out Stealing Horses

We very much enjoyed this multi layered book. We liked the importance given to the seasons and could almost feel the bitter cold of the winter which brought isolation and loneliness and contrasted with the warmth of the summer giving joy to their seemingly simple lives. The description of the main character, Trond, who reflected on his relationships with his father, his friend, his daughter and even his dog was well developed and felt real. The pace of the book changed from chapter to chapter and tension built as we learned more about the past, the importance of the river and the beauty and the harshness of the surroundings. We were surprised and frequently felt moved as the mystery slowly unfolded in this well written story.
